Confront the Violence: Supporting Native Survivors of Sexual Assault   (back)

Description:
Guest speaker: Amanda Watson, National Technical Assistance Programs Trainer/Facilitator Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition

In Spring 2015, UW-Madison conducted a climate survey to better understand the prevalence of sexual assault, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence, and stalking among students at UW-Madison. More information about the climate survey can be found here: http://www.uhs.wisc.edu/AAUSurvey/

Survey results indicate American Indian and Alaska Native students experienced vastly disproportionate rates of victimization since entering the institution.

Sexual Assault: Whereas 27.6% of all female undergraduate students had experienced sexual assault by force or incapacitation since enrolling at UW-Madison, 46.2% of American Indian and Alaskan Native female undergraduates had. Sexual Harassment: Among all respondents, 51.7% experienced sexual harassment at UW-Madison; 63.9% of Native students have.

Stalking: Among all respondents, 4.3% of students had experienced stalking since entering UW-Madison; 10.9% of Native respondents have. Among all respondents, 8% of female graduate students had experienced stalking whereas 28.8% of Native female graduate students had.

Intimate Partner Violence: Among all respondents, 9.3% of students had experienced intimate partner violence (dating or domestic violence) since entering UW-Madison; 18% of Native respondents have.

In response, the Multicultural Student Center, University Health Services End Violence on Campus (UHS EVOC), and the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Educational Achievement Pathways to Educational Achievement are hosting a no-cost training on supporting Native Survivors at UW-Madison. All are welcome. Registration is strongly encouraged, but not required.
